April 20–26: “All That the Lord Hath Spoken We Will Do” (Exodus 19–20; 24; 31–34)

The Ten Commandments aren't just a list of ancient rules—they are a foundational map for a happy life. This week, we explore how these ten timeless laws help us respect God, honor our families, and build a community rooted in truth and peace.

The Map for a Happy Life

"Don't slip! Don't trip! Just listen to the script!
If you want the blessing, then you gotta pursue!"

The Ten Commandments aren't just a list of ancient "dos and don'ts"—they are a foundational map for a happy life. After centuries of slavery in Egypt, the Israelites had to learn how to live as a free people. At the base of Mount Sinai, God gave them ten timeless laws to help them respect Him, honor their families, and build a community rooted in truth and peace. When we follow the "script," we find the safety and joy God wants for all His children.

Set the Stage: The Classroom in the Clouds

Imagine standing at the base of a mountain that is shaking with thunder and covered in a thick, dark cloud. Moses has been gone for days, climbing up into the smoke to meet with God. When he finally returns, he isn't just carrying a message—he’s carrying two heavy stone tablets engraved by the "finger of God."

The Israelites were a newly freed people who had spent their whole lives under the thumb of Pharaoh. They needed to learn how to live as a family again. These commandments were their "classroom rules" for the wilderness, designed to turn a group of wanderers into a "treasured people."

The Big Idea: The Script for Success
Have you ever tried to put together a complex LEGO set or bake a cake without looking at the instructions? It usually ends in a mess! Life is the same way. The Ten Commandments are the "Instructions" or the "Script" for a successful life.

The first four commandments teach us how to love God (keeping Him first), and the next six teach us how to love people (being honest and kind). In the song "The Ten Commandments," we talk about "trusting the truth." In a world that can be confusing, these ten rules are like solid ground under our feet. When we stay on the path the Lord has marked out, we don't have to worry about "tripping" over bad choices.

Scripture Bridge

Exodus 20:6 "And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments."

Lyric Highlight

The Ten Commandments
"Be happy with your blessings, be happy with your life
And you won't have the drama and you won't have strife!
Those are the Ten, written down in stone
So you never have to wonder when you're on your own!"

Reflect: The song says these rules help so you "never have to wonder when you're on your own." Have you ever had a time when you weren't sure what the right choice was? How does knowing the Ten Commandments make it easier to make a quick decision when your parents or teachers aren't around?

Family Activity

The "Top Ten" Scavenger Hunt

Try This: Go on a "Commandment Hunt" around your house! Look for items that remind you of the rules.

Example: A picture of your family (Honor thy Father and Mother).
Example: A clock or a calendar (Remember the Sabbath Day).
Example: A piggy bank (Thou shalt not steal).

Reflect: Read Exodus 24:7. The Israelites promised, "All that the Lord hath said will we do." As you find each item, talk about one way your family can "do" that commandment this week to keep your home happy.

Watch & Listen

The Ten Commandments

Have you ever started a new board game but realized no one knew the rules? It usually ends in an argument! That’s exactly why God gave the Ten Commandments to the Israelites. They were starting a brand-new life in the desert, and they needed a clear set of "house rules" to keep everyone safe and happy.

📖 The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20)
1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain
4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy
5. Honour thy father and thy mother
6. Thou shalt not kill
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery
8. Thou shalt not steal
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness
10. Thou shalt not covet

It’s more than just a list to memorize; it’s a reminder that God’s laws aren't a fence to keep us in, but a map to keep us safe. Whether you're at school, on the playground, or at home, this song will help you remember that when the world gets confusing, you can always "trust the truth."

Lyric Highlight Scripture Bridge Why It Matters
"You got the people in the desert and they’re walking around / Waiting for a message coming down to the ground." Exodus 19:10-11
"And the Lord said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow... and be ready against the third day: for the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai."
Expectation: The people had to prepare themselves to hear God. They weren't just waiting for "rules"; they were waiting for a connection with the Divine.
"Moses went up to the mountain top / To get a couple rules so the sinning would stop." Exodus 19:20
"And the Lord came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the Lord called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up."
Foundational Map: Without a "script," a million people in the desert would face chaos. These rules were the "Constitution" meant to protect their freedom and their safety.
"Number One is the biggest, it sets the tone / You gotta worship the Lord and the Lord alone." Exodus 20:3
"Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
Setting the Tone: If God isn't first, nothing else will be in the right place. This commandment ensures our priorities are aligned before we even look at the other nine.
The Ten Commandments
Mount Sinai wasn’t just about receiving a list of rules; it was about God defining what it looks like to be His ‘treasured people.’
