April 13–19: “Stand Still, and See the Salvation of the Lord” (Exodus 14–18)

Trapped between Pharaoh's army and the Red Sea, the Israelites learned the Lord doesn't just provide a way out—He provides a way through. From the 'miracle road' of the Red Sea to the daily gift of Manna, this week proves that God is in the business of both massive rescues and daily bread.

The Power of Peace

"You think you’re trapped? You think it’s the end?
Just watch the water bend!"

The Red Sea crossing wasn't just about getting to the other side; it was about learning to trust God. Sometimes our biggest battles aren't won by running faster or fighting harder, but by standing still long enough to let God move the obstacles we can’t touch. Whether it's a big fear or a bad day, the same God who parted the waves is ready to fight for you.

Set the Stage: The Backs Against the Wall

Imagine the sound of 600 chosen chariots thundering across the desert. The Israelites were exhausted, terrified, and convinced their journey was over. They started to murmur, wishing they had stayed in Egypt where it was "safe." But Moses didn't look at the chariots; he looked at the Lord. He knew that the same God who sent the plagues wasn't going to let His people be reclaimed by the chain. He raised his rod, and the "miracle road" opened up right through the middle of the deep.

The Big Idea: Watching the Water Bend
Why does God wait until the last possible second to part the sea? Often, He allows us to reach the edge of our own strength so that when the deliverance comes, we know exactly who sent it. In the song "Stand Still," we talk about the "water bending." In our lives, "bending water" might look like a sudden peace in a hard conversation, an unexpected help with a problem, or the courage to keep going. When we "hold our peace," we stop trying to control the outcome and start trusting the One who controls the elements.

Scripture Bridge

Exodus 14:13 "And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day."

Lyric Highlight

Stand Still
"We’re walking through the middle of a miracle road
Leaving behind the heavy layer of the load.
...Wave goodbye to the whip and the chain
You’re never gonna see those masters again!"

Reflect: The Israelites had to step onto the "dry ground" while the water was still standing like a wall on both sides. That took a lot of courage! Is there something you are afraid of right now? How does it help to know that the Lord is walking on that "miracle road" right beside you?

Family Activity

The "Miracle Road" Walk

Try This: Use two blue blankets, towels, or even painters tape to create a narrow "path" across your living room floor. Have one person act as the "Pillar of Fire" using a flashlight to lead the family through the path while everyone else carries a small "burden" (like a backpack or a pillow). When you reach the other side, drop the burden and celebrate!

Reflect: Read Exodus 14:14. How does it feel to "drop the load" and let the Lord fight the battle? This week, when you feel worried, try to picture that "miracle road" and remember that God always provides a way through.

Watch & Listen

Stand Still

There is a very specific kind of panic that sets in when you are backed into a corner with nowhere to run. For the Israelites, that corner was the crashing waves of the Red Sea, and the threat was hundreds of Egyptian chariots barreling toward them. They were so terrified they sarcastically asked Moses if he had brought them into the desert just because there weren't enough graves in Egypt! But Moses didn't flinch. He told the terrified crowd to do the hardest thing possible: "Stand Still" and watch God work.

This high-energy song captures the exact moment the panic turned into a massive miracle. God didn't just give them a boat; He bent the water and split the sea. And when the Egyptian army tried to follow, the chariot wheels broke, the waves crashed down, and the sea ironically became the grave for the bullies instead. It’s a powerful reminder that when we feel totally trapped, God can make a way where there is absolutely no way out.

Lyric Highlight Scripture Bridge Why It Matters
"You said there ain't no graves in Egypt town / That's why you brought us to this dusty ground." Exodus 14:11
"And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt?"

1 Nephi 17:25
"Now ye know that the children of Israel were in bondage; and ye know that they were laden with tasks, which were grievous to be borne; wherefore, ye know that it must needs be a good thing for them, that they should be brought out of bondage."
Ancient Irony: Egypt was a culture obsessed with death, covered in pyramids and massive tombs. The Israelites' panic led to a biting insult: did Moses think Egypt "ran out of graves"?

Short Memories: Even though their bondage was "grievous," they preferred their old chains to the "dusty ground" of freedom. Fear often makes us forget how miserable our "Egypts" actually were.
"Stand still! And see the salvation!" Exodus 14:13
"And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever."
Holding the Peace: When we are trapped, our instinct is to run or fight. Moses commands the hardest thing possible: hold your ground, stop panicking, and give God the room to fight for you. True strength is often found in spiritual stillness.
"Just watch the water bend! ... The sea is splitting wide." Exodus 14:22, 29
"And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left... But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left."

1 Nephi 17:26
"Now ye know that Moses was commanded of the Lord to do that great work; and ye know that by his word the waters of the Red Sea were divided hither and thither, and they passed through on dry ground."
Creative Deliverance: We often think of our problems as "immovable walls." The Lord can "bend" the elements of our trials to create a path where one didn't exist.

The Word of Power: Nephi reminds us that this happened by the "word" of God. When we follow God's word, even the "walls" in our way have to divide to let us through.
"Mud turns to stone under tired feet / We’re walking on the dry ground to the other side!" Exodus 14:21
"And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided."
The Perfect Miracle: Usually, the bottom of a sea is deep mud. But for the Israelites, it became "dry land." God didn't just move the water; He instantly made the footing sure so the people wouldn't get stuck. When the Lord provides a way out of captivity, He makes the ground solid.
"The wheels fall off! (They fall off!)" Exodus 14:25
"And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the Lord fighteth for them against the Egyptians."
Disarming the Enemy: Egyptian chariots were the ancient world's high-speed military tanks. By dismantling the wheels, the Lord turned the enemy's greatest strength into a heavy burden, ensuring they could no longer pursue His children.
"The water crashes in with a terrible sound! ... Wave goodbye to the whip and the chain." Exodus 14:27-28
"And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea... and the sea returned to his strength... and the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh..."

1 Nephi 17:27
"But ye know that the Egyptians were drowned in the Red Sea, who were the armies of Pharaoh."
Total Deliverance: The "crashing sound" was the sound of the enemy’s power being broken forever. This wasn't just a temporary escape; it was a permanent rescue. The Savior doesn't just help us "dodge" sin; He has the power to destroy its hold on us completely.

Daily Bread

Imagine wandering into a scorching, barren desert with over a million people, only to realize there is absolutely no food and the only water you can find is too bitter to drink. The Israelites were exhausted and afraid. But God didn’t abandon them. He miraculously healed the bitter water using a branch of wood, and then He started raining sweet, honey-tasting frost from the sky! The people had never seen anything like it, calling it "manna," which literally translates to: "What is it?"

But God attached one massive test to this heavenly food: they could only gather enough for today. If they got scared and tried to hoard it for tomorrow, it would instantly rot. This upbeat, catchy song is all about the miracle of trusting God "morning by morning." It reminds us that Heavenly Father doesn't want us to live in fear of tomorrow; He wants us to gather our spiritual "daily bread" by trusting Him to provide for us every single day.
